Civil Ceremonies and Civil Partnerships

There are many fabulous wedding and ceremony venues to choose from in the Wye Valley. The three counties of Herefordshire, Monmouthshire and Gloucestershire have a wealth of beautiful picturesque churches and two stunning cathedrals if you want to have a traditional church wedding with a religious service. There are also some very special historic buildings which are licensed for weddings

Civil Ceremonies are performed in a licensed venue. Licensed venues include stately homes, hotels, historic buildings, etc. The National Trust has some wonderful properties available to hire for ceremonies. All of these venues are also licensed for the formation of Civil Partnerships

Ceremonies in a Licensed Venue. Weddings and Civil Partnerships can only take place in licensed premises. In 1994 The laws in the United Kingdom changed, allowing venues other than Register Offices to be licensed for civil ceremonies. Many of these venues have also been licensed for Registrars to perform the legalities of a Civil Partnership agreement.

Ceremonies in a Non-Licensed Venue. It is possible to conduct a ceremony anywhere you like, providing a legal marriage has first taken place in a registered, licensed office or venue.

From a legal point of view specific Declaratory Words and Contracting Words have to be said in a Register Office or Licensed Venue, in order for your marriage to be recognised in law and for a marriage certificate to be issued. They are:

Declaratory Words

"I do solemnly declare that I know not of any lawful impediment why I (your name) may not be joined in matrimony to (partners name)"

Contracting Words

"I call upon these persons here present to witness that I (your name) do take thee (partners name) to be my lawful wedded wife (or husband)" (this wording will vary slightly for couples forming a Civil Partnership).

These words are the only legal requirements for marriage, as well as formally identifying yourselves to the registrar and signing the marriage register in front of two independent witnesses and a registrar. Civil Partners do not need to say any words at all – in fact they do not have to have a ceremony. Their partnership is formed by signing a schedule in the presence of the Civil Partnership Registrar and two witnesses.

The rest of the service, including the exchanging of rings and saying of vows to one another is purely ceremonial and can therefore take place literally anywhere and at any time of the day or night.

Professional Celebrants A professionally trained celebrant can conduct a ceremony at any venue but only following a legal marriage having first taken place in a Register office of licensed venue.

There are many qualified celebrants available to perform this special service to couples throughout the UK. Former registrar Eleanor Mason is a civil celebrant who conducts bespoke weddings. She has been awarded a Lifetime Fellowship of Professional Celebrants. for more information about the Fellowship of Professional Celebrants visit their website. www.professionalcelebrants.org.uk
