Grooms

Hire or buy a suit, write your speech, organise your stag weekend... that's just about all you have to do...

But wait... Tom Fletcher, lead singer and song writer with the band McFly confessed that he was nervous about public speaking. So he paid tribute to his beautiful bride, their families and friends with a 14 minute song written for the occasion.

No pressure guys!

Grooms

The bridegroom has quite a lot more responsibilities on his wedding day than to just show up on time and get married! Most couples will be closely involved in planning their wedding together and many will be jointly financing the big day. However, there are some duties that traditionally are the responsibility of the groom and Wye Valley Weddings is here to help you...

Wedding speeches - The role of the father of the bride, the groom and the best man

Wedding Speeches

Traditionally the father of the bride is usually the person who pays for the wedding he should be the first person to make a speech. His role is to welcome the guests and thank them for coming to the wedding, as well as having an opportunity to express his love for his daughter and welcome his new son-in-law to the family.

The groom's speech usually takes the form of a brief response on behalf of himself and his new wife by thanking his new father in law before expressing some personal and loving comments about his new wife, as possibly including some anecdotes about their courtship - how they met, the course of their relationship and of course, the proposal.

The purpose of a best man’s speech is to thank everyone involved in planning and participating in the wedding and also to 'introduce' the groom to the bride’s family and friends. The best man will usually regale the guests with some amusing anecdotes about the groom and hopefully reveal some not too embarrassing secrets! This is no easy feat for the best man who, unless he speaks publicly on a regular basis, may never have had to give a speech before.
